Iran Railway History
Iran’s national railways is the oldest means of modern transportation in the country. The first appearance of railways in Iran dates back to Qajar era in the 19th century when a meter gauge railway was established in the capital, Tehran. Three other railways were added in the beginning of the 20th century before the second world war. The Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran, (ironically!) expedited the development of the railways in Iran as the foreign occupying forces needed what they called the Persian Corridor to provide the Soviet Union, then in war with German forces, with supplies. After the end of the war, the new railways appeared one after the other and the process has continued until the present time. Iran’s national railways include 21 domestic railway lines and seven railway links with other countries. Trains are very popular with the people in Iran. Families usually travel together in their exclusive compartments and have loads of fun on the way.
